Gliding

Gliding is a sport for all ages and abilities and is said to be to be the ultimate free flying experience. Silently soaring through the air at speeds up to 170mph without an engine has made gliding a popular way for experts and beginners to get airborne.

Using a light aircraft or a winch, the glider is either lifted into the air or pulled along the ground until it takes off like a kite. Once airborne the glider is released from the aircraft or winch and stays in the air by the ‘lift’ from air raising from the ground. In favorable weather conditions, gliders have been recorded to travel distances of over 600 miles to then land again.

Around Norfolk there are a number of clubs and aviation schools operating out of disused World War bases offering a range of lessons, trials and packages for anyone keen on trying the exciting sport of gliding. With some clubs offering special courses such as aerobatics and courses aimed at those trying to achieve a National Private Pilots License (SLMG) both beginners and advanced pilots can find an exciting and challenging option.

Gliding lessons are dependent on the right weather conditions and availability.
