Winter Golf Tips for Wensum Valley Club Members

While golf is a year-round sport, the winter months can add extra challenges to our games. If you are committed to the game no matter the weather, we have some excellent tips for you…

1. Yellow balls!

Yellow balls are easier to spot among leaves, or frost - in fact, it is actually the most visible colour in the spectrum! This also means when the sun is drawing in, your ball will be easier to follow at long distances.

While you may be the most dedicated golfer in Norfolk, poor weather can seriously test your willpower to turn up. If a friend is relying on you to turn up you will be more inclined to get out of the house. Remember, practice in challenging conditions will only improve your ability to adapt in Spring games!

Invest in some high-quality winter gloves suited for golf. Warm and dry hands are key for good grip and a great swing!

4.  Keep Hydrated

It is very tempting to swap water for tea and coffee when it’s cold, but you still need the minerals and energy that water provides. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water at every hole to stay properly hydrated.

Cold golf balls don’t fly as far as warm balls, so use two! Alternate balls at each hole whilst keeping the other in your pocket for warmth. As long as you do not artificially heat the ball during the round you are keeping within the rules.

Being realistic, your ball will not go as far in the cold, nor will it roll as far due to the ground conditions. You may want to consider switching from a 7 iron to a 5 on every shot or even play one tee up from your normal length.

Ditch the buggy and walk, the movement will keep your body warm and you’ll be looser to swing.
